The Last Word: Jimmy Carter

Jimmy Carter was the first President I remember being elected to office. I remember the toothy grin, peanuts, and his brother Billy. Along the way, there was the energy crisis, the Camp David Accords, and the Soviets invading Afghanistan. The popular Senator Ted Kennedy challenged him for the Democratic Nomination.  Then came the hostage crisis in Iran which consumed him and the nation. Add inflation that never let up, and he was left vulnerable to Ronald Reagan in 1980.

Whether you agreed with him or not I believe he wasn't going to intentionally steer you wrong. He was real or the very least presented himself that way. He was a decent person and always tried to do his best.

RIP President Jimmy Carter

PSA: Merrick Garland Wasn't the Right Attorney General for this Moment

This 5 minute stretch of an Episode of Pod Save America between PSA host Dan Pfeiffer and Melissa Murray of the Strict Scrutiny podcast have some interesting points made of Merrick Garland and others were not able to meet the moment in history regarding Trump and the January 6 2021 insurrection. Attorney General waited after almost two years before appointing Special Counsel Jack Smith and had taken a bottom up approach in prosecuting offenders for January 6, 2026 attack on the U.S. Capitol which essentially saving the biggest offender(presumably Donald Trump). Mistakenly thinking Trump would fade into history like most defeated in a presidential election usually do. This as we now know was a huge political miscalculation I think part of the miscalculation was that the institutions themselves would hold on their own. This I think doesn't count that the institutions are only as strong as the people in them and how they are used.

Another example of of expecting institutions to defend themselves is the recent action by those in the media. It even started before the election when owner of the Washington Post, Jeff Bezos owner of Amazon, nixing a Kamala Harris endorsement shortly before election day which was and essentially an endorsement of Donald Trump. Now recently, along with Meta/Facebook owner Mark Zuckerberg,  each contributing $1 million dollars each to Trump's Inauguration. We also saw Joe and Mika of MSNBC's "Morning Joe" meet and kiss the ring at Mar a Lago, then they try and defend it. Just breaking recently was a $15 million settlement(and apology by "Meet the Press host George Stephanopolus) by ABC News for alleged defamation. If we were expecting our heroes to be in the corporate media you're going to be tremendously disappointed. They're job is to defend shareholders, profits but not the U.S. Constitution.

The capitulation by ABC News sets an awful precedent and will certainly invite more of the same. This will certainly embolden Trump to intimidate the news media and their owners who only interest is their bottom line and not journalism.

The most interesting Democrat in the country? It's AOC.

I was skeptical of AOC when she first burst on the scene in 2018. She was a bit of a left-wing bomb-thrower at first protesting at Speaker Nancy Pelosi's office when she first entered Congress. She was a member of what became known as "The Squad". Since then though she has proven an excellent communicator. She's now vying for chair of the Oversight Committee which signals, even if she shouldn't get it, to her ambitions.  I agree with Chris in saying she is one of the most interesting Democrats to be watching in the future

Hunter Biden Was Unfairly Prosecuted

The outrage from right-wing punditry and politicians was to be expected. What was disappointingly aggravating was the criticism and anger from mainstream media and left leaning punditry. Here lies a fundamental example of the differences of the left and right political ecosystems. When Trump (or other MAGA adjacent figures) are convicted, charged with felonies, promote insurrections, impeached twice and and still have pending indictments working through the system that would cripple a typical politician what happens with Trump? His poll numbers and fundraising goes through the roof and is reelected President.

Biden pardons his last son on charges that any other first time offender if he were an ordinary citizen wouldn't have reached consideration. The investigations were still ongoing and certainly wouldn't have stopped. on January 20th. The cry about "Hunter's laptop" is reminiscent of "What about her emails" were to Hillary Clinton that came about endless hearings and investigations about Benghazi (sound familiar?). Then came the cries of "Well he said he wouldn't." from pundits and the media that came quickly. Many criticisms even from respected mainstream or left leaning people.

Many pardon critics cry Trump will use it as justification for him pardoning convicted January 6th insurrectionists and others. Seriously? He has already made it clear he would pardon them anyway so we are offended why? He would justify(or not) the pardons anyway so what really the difference. Given the public's political amnesia, Hunter's pardon will be forgotten old news come January 2025.

Also forgotten are the friends and loyalists Trump pardoned from his first term: Michael Flynn, Paul Manafort, Roger Stone and Steve Bannon. You also can't forget Charles Kushner, Donald's daughter Ivanka's father-in-law, who is now nominated for Ambassador to France.

President Biden broke "norms"? Really? Trump's entire first term(and brand) is about breaking "norms" yet this is the hill mainstream media and left wing pundits want to stand on? That, as President Biden would say, is a bunch of malarkey.

Democrats Clutching the Pearls Once Again

Democrats once again clutch their pearls over President Biden pardoning his son Hunter recently. Many in the on the political left are indignant that Joe pardoned his son after he said he wouldn't. As if it's the first time a politician changed his mind or flip flopped. Especially now 8 years into the Trump era we're getting upset over this? Come on people. At least Representative Jasmine Crockett has some good sense.

Top Harris Campaign Staff Tell Us What Went Wrong In 2024 Ele...

Quentin makes an excellent point near the end (1:23:42) saying too much of the critiquing of Dems came from it's own side. Where as Republican's once Trump was the clear nominee they closed ranks and supported him no matter what what focusing on winning. As I heard elsewhere the left has to learn to be ruthlessly pragmatic about winning. I first noticed this in 2016 where the biggest Democratic critiques from it's own side. Democratic Party groups need to learn how to unite come election time like a winning team does going into the Superbowl who put aside differences and realize they'll have better chance to win united rather than separate. Republicans have learned this and Democrats have not.

Are Left-Wing Activist Groups to Blame for Donald Trump's Win?

Jon Stewart Urges Dems to Fight Like Republicans and Exploit Loopholes

As I heard before on another podcast. Biden and Democrats seem still want to play integrity politics meanwhile the Trump and Republicans play “Fuck you“ politics. Morning Joe, Mika and many Democratic politicians(including President Biden) learned absolutely nothing in the last 10 years. AG Merrick Garland played integrity politics by waiting two years to appoint Jack Smith and now all that is waste because Donald escapes accountability and is re-elected. It

Republicans clawed their way back to power not by playing nice but focusing on winning by exploiting loopholes, norms to win. Meanwhile, the Democratic Party and mainstream media seems to be stuck trying to play by the rules straight and going out of their way look like they had integrity. How has that worked so far? I'll ask again on January 20, 2025.

Integrity politics has got us to where we are now. Doesn't mean illegal means but at least play on same field. Most of all as in sports READ THE RULE book! Republicans have apparently. Know the loopholes and look for advantages when possible. Be ruthless. You think Trump and MAGA worry about shame or how it looks?

This is Who We Are

Trump is who we are. When the era of Trump first hit about a decade ago it was said by many that he is not who we are as a country. Then after each supposed event that topple him he would come back to the right's glee and left's bewilderment and frustration. This can't be who we are, or is it? New York Times columnist Carlos Lozada contends his hold makes a case is that Trump's hold is because it is who we are or at what we've become. They see themselves in him and someone who is fighting for them. It becomes an almost cult-like hold on them.

I've listened to this podcast numerous times as it seemed to strike a point that most who've tried to figure out how Donald Trump was victorious once again despite  his shortcomings and egregious behavior. Many since the election, as Carlos notes,  were picking out issues on a relatively focused reasons like, the war in Gaza, Trump's misogyny, Governor Tim Walz over Governor Josh Shapiro as VP, the economy, the Latin vote, Trump's use anti-Trans rhetoric as too woke in ads to her word salad or speaking style as reasons she lost. While many of these may have valid points it seems to be too focused. Trump made gains along most demographics which indicates something not at ground level or even a 33,000 foot level but satellite view such as this is who we are as an entire country or at least enough to hold power. Something that was tried to be explained off as a fluke in 2016 but by now cannot be brushed off as anything but as the new normal.

In other words we shouldn't deny Trumpism isn't who we are. It certainly is. Does mean lay prostate let every thing go? Absolutely not. Regroup, reassess and move forward. A little smarter and more aware of where we stand. We've seen Trump's season one of his own "Apprentice" show before. The "shock and Awe" of his cabinet picks already is just the beginning. Save our strength and pick our battles, they'll be many to choose. Stay in there but keep your head about you.

Here We Go Again

"For this is your home, my friend, do not be driven from it; great men have done great things here, and will again, and we can make America what America must become."

- James Baldwin

Here we are again. While at work, my wife texted me, "It looks like Cheeto is winning, and I'm terrified." Working the night of the election, I could only get updates periodically on my phone. In previous elections, they came in haphazardly and did not worry about the first returns. They tend to come in haphazardly and be inaccurate.

When I got home my wife was up, she's usually asleep, scrolling through her phone and quite upset how it was going. I  tried to be reassuring as the last election was razor thin and took days and thought it'd take days to resolve. When I was able to check the election map and when all the battle ground states were leaning red it was not a good sign. Even worse Trump was leading by 3-5 points in each which was the sign that it wasn't going to even close. In 2020 many of the these same states were 1-2 point margins(or less). When AP(Associatted Press) called Pennsylvania for Donald I knew it was over.

Since then it's been range of emotions and thoughts of what happened and why. Every pundit or talking head is giving their two cents. The theories, opinions all vary and the finger pointing has done.  In the end it really wasn't even close and actually looks like Trump won the popular vote for the first time. The Electoral college Kamala Harris(226 -295 as of this writing) looks though she might finish slightly lower than to what Hillary Clinton total's were at 232-306.

So what happened? It make take a while for the dust to settle but here are a few thoughts.

To start with I think Vice President did a commendable job with the daunting task of picking Biden left off who was running behind Trump by many points already. She tried to do in a 107 days what most candidates have a year or more to put together which put her at a disadvantage. Most candidates use that year or two to hone their messages and get their campaign up and running smoothly. Harris had just roughly a 100 days to do so. Some had advocated a mini primary or open contest at the Democratic Convention but any other candidate would still have the shrunkdown timeline to put the logistics together for a highly condensed national campaign. It has also been pointed out(by a recent NPR podcast) that Harris's campaign largely the Biden campaign staff and strategy. She did have some close staff but because of the short time period it was never fully hers and while they all wanted to win.  Going from Biden, a 78-year-old white man, to a younger Black/Asian woman would have had different energy and ideas that would be more ideal to for Harris.  It's a big reason why many critiqued that they didn't know who she was which she could never satisfy.

As much as I hate to say President Joe Biden shares some responsibility. Before anything, I do think he's done a decent job as President and helped land the economy without a recession after the pandemic. Although inflation rate and unemployment rates enjoying a low period few forget the high peaks in 2022-23(fairly or unfairly).

At first, I stuck with Joe even despite the relatively poor approval ratings though some seemed to forget Trump was never high or broke 50% in his terms. I should have been aware though. Early in 2024 when the likes of pundits like Ezra Klein, David Axelrod, and the Pod Save America crew advocated that Joe drop out I thought they were crazy and I was angry with them. Modern history didn't look kindly on late dropouts of candidates. President Lyndon Johnson's late bowing out in 1968 contributed to Nixon's victory later that year. When it seemed inevitable his support within the party was fading fast he bowed out suddenly and threw support behind his VP Harris was the smart decision. A call for a shortened primary or open convention would not only seem to be skipping over a minority woman Vice President candidate and voting block it would have even shortened the already disadvantageous shortened campaign time. Decisions had to be made quickly under less-than-ideal conditions.

Project 2025 Update

While the mainstream media is in a frenzy about Biden's debate performance Project 2025 seems to be gaining steam in the media too. John Oliver's Last Week Tonight segment about a possible Trump plan for a second term(seen in my last post) has fueled a renewed interest. The Project 2025 is familiar though I first encountered it about 9 months ago on Leeja Miller's Youtube channel. I'm glad it's finally aging attention as it should.

Convicted Felon Trump is Not Ever Pivoting

He's never going to "pivot". He didn't in 2017 nor will he in the future. It is insane. It drives me insane the media thinks convicted felon Donald has turned a new leaf and is acting like a normal politician. I totally agree with Chris, he has not nor will he ever change

Convicted Felon Trump

Unless you've been under a rock the last week former President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, was found guilty in his hush-money case in New York City. Sadly, a now-convicted felon is the standard bearer of the Republican Party and still has a 50/50 chance of being President again. It's mind-boggling but not to be too surprising. In this polarizing political environment most have made up their minds. It will be interesting to see where independents or those that haven't made up their minds, yes they do exist after almost 10 years of Trump.

Trump is Cancel Culture

First let me say it is so refreshing to have Jon Stewart back in 2024 election cycle. It seemed he took his hiatus at just the moment we could have used his insight and humor in the foreseen Trump rise to the Presidency. Nothing against Trevor Noah whom I love very much also. There is something about Stewart's style and manner that just hits different.

Second, this cancel culture, manufactured grievance, and outrage has been has been going on for years. When Donald came down the escalator in 2015 this extreme wing of the right had found it's leader and spokesperson. Donald's brash style of narcissism, misogyny and grievance made for a perfect match that few foresaw in the mainstream.

Third Jon rightly points out the irony of those complaining on the right about the the woke left silencing the right. The right tells you this on talk radio, podcasts, Fox "News", OAN, Newsmax, books, countless PACs, bloggers, Tik Toker's, YouTuber's and so on. If only they could be heard.

A Loser

"The weariness and vulnerability captured in those courtroom images betray a growing recognition that he could wind up as the thing his old man most reviled.

A convicted criminal?

No, worse. A loser."

-David Axelrod (What Donald Trump Fears the Most ,The Atlantic 4/22/24

Poor former President stuck in a courtroom for allegedly paying off a porn star he had an affair with. I agree what Donald fears the most is being labeled or remembered as a loser. One may contend he's already there. He must feel it's so beneath him to have to appear in court like this for a a matter so seedy and a matter made perfectly for tabloids(one of which is involved in the case too). The allegation of an affair almost seems secondary these days. It's "baked into the cake" in matters of Donald Trump's character.

Many pundits or commentators have almost dismissed this case as barely worthy of the attention compared to the other cases pending against Donald., although in seems to be in contrast to wall to wall attention it's received. It's almost to the level of the O. J. Simpson trial of the 90's.

I do think that this trial has proved a few things. It is possible despite Donald's delay tactics to get him to trial for a criminal acts. They may seem trifle in comparison but he's still in court nonetheless. Something Jack Smith and Fani Willis haven't managed to do yet. I congratulate Attorney General Alvin Bragg for this accomplishment. He has proved it can be done. Secondly one may look at the case of Al Capone who was a notorious mob boss in the early part of the 1900's. For all his violent and hubris what did he finally get put to jail for? Tax evasion. Bad bookkeeping. Donald's on trial for what? Bad bookkeeping to hide an affair from voters.  Could this be the modern day equivalent of Al Capone's tax evasion that sent him to jail? Only time will tell. One thing is certain, Alvin Bragg broke the ice and got Trump, a former President, into criminal court to face charges. What say you Fani Willis and Jack Smith?

Biden Is Still the Democrats’ Best Bet for November

"Joe Biden is almost certainly the strongest possible candidate Democrats can field against Donald Trump in 2024."

- Jonathan V. Last

The recent Supreme Court decision to leave an insurrectionist on Colorado's primary ballot just confirmed what many of us already know, the only way to defeat The Donald will be the ballot box. The courts will not do it. Jack Smith and Fani Willis will more than likely have their cases pushed back too far to matter.

It's sad to see likes of David Axelrod and Ezra Klein living up to the moniker of Democratic "bed-wetter" suggesting Biden should call it a day. Especially Ezra suggesting an open Democratic Convention this summer. Seriously? Does 1968 ring any warning bells?

Seth Meyer summed it up perfectly. Part 1 and Part 2

There seems to be amnesia regarding 2020. It wasn't until "Super Tuesday" that year that Joe Biden became the Democratic front-runner despite not having rabid followers like those of Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. Even I voted for Elizabeth Warren on that day. It quickly became apparent that Biden was the one. He seemed like the one all along in retrospect. Least offense and even Donald struggled for a nickname for him. The right-wing media struggled for something to pin on him. The best they could do is go after his last surviving son Hunter Biden and his infamous laptop.

It's essentially an old man who commits gaffes versus Donald Trump who tried to overthrow an election he lost, owes $455 million for fraud, has been indicted 4 times, hugs flags, can't spell his wife's name, stored top secret documents in his bathroom, watched in glee the U.S. Capitol was stormed by insurrectionists and the list goes on. How is this even a contest?

Now the real work begins to win in November.

Both Sides Are Not The Same

Few things I find more irritating in in today's political polarization is the claim that both sides. So when the local regional paper , the Sun Chronicle(based out of Attleboro , Massachusetts), added that President's Biden's comments on January 6th, 2024 (which was 3rd Anniversary of the insurrection), in an editorial called "Our View: Never Forget but Let's Move Forward' which proceeded to compare both the political left and right as equal. It insinuated that both sides are equally at fault for the polarization. Ignoring decades of sustained right wing extremism permeating from the right through right-wing propaganda that have fed this extremism and which has culminated in events like the January 6th insurrection.  Leading the charge were entities such as Fox "News" and conservative talk radio that have. In effect it was in effect chastising President  Biden for speaking out against it. If anything it's about time he did so. It's his job to defend the Constitution of the United States according to oath of office he took.

I did right a letter to the editor which appeared in the Sun Chronicle on January 16, 2024.

It is sad when those in the mass media in an attempt avoid accusations being politically biased seem to over compensate by giving them the same weight of value with little or no nuance or context. I'm not against presenting the truth regardless politics but it doesn't mean both sides are correct or have the same credibility.
